Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the option to contest specific decisions from the official, echoing the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
