Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
