Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
