Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.
This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being kept in a national police facility in the capital and will have a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also asked that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.
The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. Lula was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
