Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
